Papers Needed to Transfer An Out of State Title into Your Name



THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND STATE COMPTROLLER
WILL NOT ALLOW OUR OFFICE TO ACCEPT TITLES OR DOCUMENTS WITH
ERRORS, ALTERATIONS, STRIKEOVERS OR WHITEOUT.

INSPECTION - The vehicle will need to be Texas inspected. You will be given a Form VI-30-A (Green Sheet). This must have no alterations or corrections. These inspections can be done at many full service gas stations or other locations that display the emblem for Texas inspection. The green sheet must also have the odometer reading on it. Inspection must be done in the county in which you reside.

APPLICATION FOR TEXAS CERTIFICATE OF TITLE (FORM 130-U) - This application must be signed by the Seller/Donor* and the Buyer/Donee**. Dated sales price and odometer reading must be filled out. This form does not need to be notarized. This form does not need to be notarized..

TITLE - The Title must be completed by the seller. Include the Buyer/Donee's name and complete address, odometer reading, date of sale, and the seller's signature. The Buyer/Donee/s signature may be required.

LIABILITY INSURANCE*** - The Buyer/Donee will need proof of insurance that meets Texas liability requirements in his/her name. Current insurance on another vehicle in the buyer/donee's name will cover the vehicle being transferred for a period of 30 days from the date of sale. Otherwise, proof of insurance on the car being transferred will need to be provided in the buyer's/donee's name.

The transfer can be done in the county of the new owner.

Title transfer must be done within 20 working days from the date of sale on the back of the Title, or 20 working days from the date the vehicle entered Texas..

We will accept payment by either cash or check. If payment is by check, the check can be drawn on an out-of-state bank if you have a local driver's license, or drawn on a local bank with an out-of-state driver's license.

*DONOR - The person who gives a car to another person as a gift.

**DONEE - A person who has received a car as a gift.
